This seems like an elegant way to reference war diaries to me, but there could be problems I haven't thought of. The reasoning behind it is:
- before digitisation, diaries were usually referenced by date because they had no page numbers.
- because of digitisation, the same original document could have more than one digital version. It's hard to predict which version someone has access to or prefers to use.
- every unit page should have a war diary heading in its sources section, and this should contain the official catalogue references and references to any unofficial published versions (print or digital).
It depends on using Template:WarDiaryHeading to control the heading name so that incoming links can be automatically generated and are guaranteed to work. If this method turns out to be alright, Template:WarDiaryHeading would need to be added to the preload and any existing pages. --GavinRobinson (talk) 04:39, 16 December 2014 (PST)
