* import and test Wikipedia citation templates: imported and seem to be working. No performance problems even with 40 instances of Cite book per page. Changed documentation pages to link to Wikipedia so we don't have to maintain documentation here and don't have to import all required templates and modules. Still need to:
+
* update Naming conventions for British units with TF rules from AOs/WOIs
** update other Citation templates to pass data to Wikipedia templates
+
* branches and services for WAFF
** find unit pages that have unit histories etc and put them into citation templates
+
* services/branches for strictly colonial forces: try to find out what they were actually called. Try Quarterly Army List, and combine this with finding missing colonial units.
* add embarkation lists and various operational records to Official unit diaries and histories
+
* fields and categories to track completeness of pages eg are names/relationships complete, with exact dates and citations?
* create pages for British divisional machine gun units
+
* once the above are settled:
* British and Indian division pages:
+
** Australian CMF/PF units need linking to Army List and names confirming
** WO 95 sub-series for non-WF theatres
+
** AIF battalions need full names adding from Monthly Army List
** WO 157 if any
+
** pals battalions need cat, redirects and name checks (got early official name histories from ACIs but still need source for nicknames)
* create/expand definition pages for types and specific types. Specific types still needed:
+
** easy name checks for British infantry:
** cavalry squadron
+
*** pre-war regular infantry battalions
** mounted division
+
*** Special Reserve battalions
** mounted infantry regiment
+
*** regular cavalry should already have correct names but will need confirming
** record office
+
*** divisions from Becke (probably already done but will need confirming)
** cyclist battalion
+
*** 1st line TF (AOs confirm go straight from old names to 1/, but things are much more complicated for 2nd and 3rd lines)
** cyclist company
+
** name checks for Indian Army (got Indian Army List)
** horse artillery battery
+
* British page name conventions (see Talk:Naming conventions for British units). Once this is settled:
** horse artillery brigade
+
** import British VTC/VF battalions and regiments (got name histories from AOs)
** horse artillery ammunition column
+
** look for and import missing British infantry brigades from Becke and James
** field artillery brigade
+
** redirects for British Army infantry battalions that omit the word 'Battalion' (will make search suggestions easier)
** light mortar battery
+
* other things that don't depend on the above:
** medium mortar battery
+
** pages for national Red Cross societies, ICRC, YMCA then add narratives from waiting list
** heavy mortar battery
+
** import other American units from Order of Battle:
** field ambulance
+
*** AEF GHQ/army/corps troops from vol 1
** mounted field ambulance
+
*** home divisions, departments and camps from vol 3.2
** expeditionary force
+
*** all other home units from vol 3.3
** army
+
** import Indian Volunteers and Defence Force
** corps troops
+
** import NZTF and see if any NZEF battalions or brigades are missing
* add more tasks to How you can help:
+
** import Canadian militia infantry and cavalry
** highland, rifle, cyclist and pals battalions
+
** check Quarterly Army List for obscure colonial units
** division-corps relationships
+

** regimental museums and archives
+
Once above things are done we should have more or less all infantry and cavalry units from the British Empire and all US Army units.
** IWM Lives communities
+

** yeomanry regiments converted to infantry or machine gun battalions
+
Other things for the future:
** improve type definition pages
+

** British Territorial battalions needing further disambiguation:
+
* look into using APIs to extract batches of personal narratives and media from major collections
*** 6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, UK
+
* see how many IWM Lives communities need to be added to unit pages
*** 4th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment, UK
+
* decide which tasks most need to be added to How you can help (too many/too complicated could be overwhelming)
*** 7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, UK
+
* should AIF field artillery batteries be merged with parent brigades? List of relationships at Digger History.
*** 5th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, UK

*** 9th Battalion Manchester Regiment, UK

*** 5th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, UK

* AOs/Royal Warrants for MGC and Tank Corps:

** 1915/413 and 414

** 1916/253

** 1917/239 and 240

* look into replacing RefLives with a more general template to represent a person, link to any canonical source for their identity, and possibly insert microformats

* make some notes on how to represent ships

Historian and palaeographer. I run Different Hand Ltd, doing manuscript transcription, XML markup, research assistance and related services. My PhD thesis and published work are on horses and cavalry in the English Civil War. I got into First World War research through tracing my great-grandad, who was in 1/5th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. I was a moderator at Your Archives and used to blog at Investigations of a Dog.
