A corps, also known as an army corps, was the tactical level above a division and below an army. It usually included two or more infantry divisions or mounted divisions along with a group of corps troops directly attached to corps headquarters.

British Empire[edit]

Tactical corps were used on the Western Front, at Gallipoli, and in the Middle East. Most had a similar structure but the number of divisions to a corps varied. More details are given under the country headings below. No other countries of the British Empire raised a whole corps. Most corps headquarters were formed by the British Army but they could include units and formations from many different countries.

A typical corps on the Western Front consisted of three infantry divisions but this could vary.

Cavalry Corps was formed on the Western Front and included up to five British and Indian cavalry divisions.

Desert Mounted Corps was formed in the Egypt and Palestine theatre from a mixture of British, Australian and New Zealand mounted divisions.
