The United States of America entered World War One in 1917 and sent a large number of units to fight in Europe.

The American services and branches were:

The US Army used the continental system, in which the division was the main administrative and tactical unit.

Formations in Europe[edit]

American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) was the General Headquarters for American forces in Europe. It commanded the American armies and corps on the Western Front, and detachments that intevened in the Russian Civil War:

American units on the Western Front often fought under French, and sometimes under British, command.
